How to analyze a Dota 2 replay
Watching a whole replay at 1x takes 40 minutes and usually teaches you nothing: you see what you already saw while playing. A good review is short, follows an order and ends with one or two habits to change. Here is the method coaches use.
1. Start from your deaths, not from the start of the game
Deaths are the fastest way to find mistakes. For each death, rewind 20 seconds and ask three questions: how many enemies were missing from the map, where your teammates were, and whether you had a way out (TP, BKB, a defensive item).
If 3 or more enemies were missing and you were alone on their half of the map, it was a map-awareness mistake, not bad luck. If you died with BKB or Glimmer ready, it was a reaction mistake.
2. Check the first 10 minutes against a benchmark
Last hits and gold at 10 minutes say more than your final score. Compare them with pros on the same hero and role: a carry with 40 last hits at 10' where pros have 60 lost a whole item worth of gold in lane.
Also look at who you were laning against: 1v2 lanes are harder, and the comparison should account for it.
3. Look for dead minutes after the laning stage
Between 10 and 25 minutes, find stretches of 3+ minutes where you were alive, not fighting and gained almost no gold. That is where games are quietly lost: walking around without a plan.
Also check gold sitting in your pocket: 2,000+ unspent gold for several minutes means a slower item and gold you lose when you die.
4. Review fights: presence, position, items
For each big fight: were you there, were you the first target, did you use your key items? A core who dies first in a lost fight turns it into a 4v5.
After a won fight, did your team take a tower, Roshan or the Tormentor within 90 seconds? Fights won without an objective are wasted advantages.
5. Pick one habit, not ten
End the review with a single rule for your next games, like 'when 3 enemies are missing, I farm near a tower'. Ten things to fix means none get fixed.
