How to get better at Dota 2: the 7 most common mistakes

Most games below Immortal are not lost to outplays but to the same few habits repeated every match. These are the seven DotaJudge finds most often in analyzed replays, with one concrete fix for each.

1. Dying with enemies missing from the map

Three or more enemies not visible for 15+ seconds is a warning sign. Fix: every time you last hit, glance at the minimap; if 3 are missing, farm near teammates or a tower until they show up.

2. Unspent gold

Holding 2,000+ gold for minutes delays your items and you lose part of it when you die. Fix: buy components as soon as you can and send them with the courier; late game, keep only your buyback.

3. Dead minutes between 10 and 25

Walking without a plan after the laning stage costs more gold than a lost lane. Fix: plan a route before leaving a spot: lane, camp, camp, lane.

4. Dying with defensive items ready

BKB, Glimmer, Eul or Satanic unused when you die. Fix: put them on comfortable keys and press them at the first stun or enemy jump, not when you're already low.

5. Winning fights without taking objectives

After a won fight the enemy has 30-60 seconds of disadvantage. Fix: always ask 'tower or Roshan?' before going back to farm.

6. Being first to die in fights

A core that dies first turns every fight into 4v5. Fix: stay behind your initiator and enter after the enemy uses their key disables.

7. Not helping ganked teammates

Standing still while a teammate nearby is attacked by 2-3 enemies, or keeping a TP you could use. Fix: move toward them at once; even arriving forces the enemy to spend spells.
